Dear Parents and Students,

We believe that we can make that possible by providing our learners with rigorous and innovative learning experiences that are highly relevant and deeply connected to the world around us. Each of our students has aspirations and dreams. We strive to help our students acquire the skills and experiences needed to realize those dreams, whatever they may be.

Our two-year Junior High School program is specially designed to meet the intellectual, emotional and physical needs of our growing 7th and 8th grade students. We want to help our learners make a smooth transition from elementary school to the secondary learning environment. During this period of transition, we work to provide students with an opportunity to explore new areas of interest and support them to apply their learning in a variety of relevant ways through research-based teaching, access to rigorous coursework and individualized mentoring and guidance.

This handbook will provide you with general information about the organization of the Junior High School, expectations for students, an overview of the services provided and an outline of promotion requirements. As you familiarize yourself with the handbook, I invite you to read through the course descriptions as they will offer additional clarity for each of the grade level offerings.

Junior High School is an exciting time! During these formative years, you will have many opportunities to grow and to begin to map out your chose areas of study as you prepare for and enter into your future high school years.

Planning for Junior High

OPTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR PROVIDING ASSISTANCE TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE LEARNING DIFFICULTIES OR WHO NEED OR MAY NEED SPECIAL EDUCATION

If a child is experiencing learning difficulties, the parent may contact the person listed below to learn about the district鈥檚 overall general education referral or screening system for support services. This system links students to a variety of support options, including referral for a special education evaluation. Students having difficulty in the regular classroom should be considered for tutorial, compensatory, and other support services that are available to all students.

At any time, a parent is entitled to request an evaluation for special education services. Within a reasonable amount of time, the district must decide if the evaluation is needed. If evaluation is needed, the parent will be notified and asked to provide consent for the evaluation. The district must complete the evaluation and the report within 45 calendar days of the date the district receives the written consent. The district must give a copy of the report to the parent.

If the district determines that the evaluation is not needed, the district will provide the parent with a written notice that explains why the child will not be evaluated. This written notice will include a statement that informs the parent of their rights if they disagree with the district. Additionally, the notice must inform the parent how to obtain a copy of the Notice of Procedural Safeguards - Rights of Parents of Students with Disabilities.

Directory information on students will be released upon request without a parent鈥檚 consent, unless the parent elects in writing to restrict directory information.
