To make content in Canvas more interactive and engaging for students, TI2 and É«ÎÑÎÑÎÞÂëÒ»Çø¶þÇøÈýÇø adopted a tool called H5P in the summer of 2020.

The state of Texas introduced redesigned STAAR, EOC and TELPAS tests during the 2022-2023 school year to include what are called technology enhanced items. Many of these new question types like drag and drop are available in H5P. Consequently, many teachers are using H5P to provide their students with low stakes, self-check opportunities to both gain experience with interactive question types and to demonstrate content understanding. To get a better understanding of what can be done with H5P, take a minute to participate in this fourth-grade science .

Here’s what some teachers had to say about the benefits of H5P to their students’ learning.

H5P enables the utilization of multiple media types within a single format and provides me with the opportunity to observe and help with student understanding, as needed. Using H5P in conjunction with Canvas and other programs provides the benefit of immediate feedback on what they are working on. It is such a positive thing when they can see their progress, especially when they get things right. I have seen many a-ha moments when they get it wrong but see the right answer. Also, H5P lends itself very well to a blended classroom allowing some self-pacing within the boundaries of class time so they can get help and I can clear up misunderstandings. I have also seen benefit from the multiple attempts on things such as Drag-n-Drop activities. There is a bit of competition on who can get it right the first time.

I think [H5P interactives] help my students because the exercises allow them to get a good grasp of the new STAAR question types without making them feel like they are taking a formal test. It also helps that I can give immediate feedback for all wrong answers, and they can correct themselves while they are completing the activities. The quick feedback for anything that may not be correct can help turn the learning experience from teacher-centered to student led. I highly recommend any teacher just try using one or two to start with and watch how addicted you can get making them fun for your students!

H5P interactives help to diversify what the students are doing and help prepare them for the CA and STAAR since those exams are now using interactive question types. Not only that, but there are several different types of H5P interactive types that help stimulate different aspects of the student mind. I have had several students say they enjoy H5Ps since they can go at their own pace or retry whenever they do not do well at the beginning. They have also said they prefer H5Ps over the usual work of taking notes or writing short responses since H5Ps are more interactive and proactive in learning.

If you are a teacher in grades 3 to 12 and have never used H5P before, check out the H5P endorsed apps page for more information and resources.
