October 2016 bond construction update

Workman classroom addition

Bond-related construction projects are underway throughout the district. And this fall, construction will begin at many more campuses.

Below are details about the projects currently underway.

Boles Junior High
Construction at Boles Junior High is temporarily on hold. An underground main electrical line is located where the new addition will be built, so the AISD and architect are currently working out details with the City of Arlington to move that line. Once that is complete, construction will start.

Boles will receive a new special education suite within the existing building. The suite will include four special education classrooms, a mock apartment (ADL Room), motor lab, ISPD classroom, PAES/Prevoc room, ABLE room and conference room. Three restroom banks will also be renovated to comply with ADA.

The addition of the new suite will require the relocation of existing classrooms. To make space, Boles will receive an addition. The new addition will include a computer lab, an art room with support spaces and three CTHEI classrooms.

Construction of the addition will begin first. Once complete, the special education suite will be built.

Construction at Boles is being managed by Pogue Construction, following plans designed by Stantec.

Career and Technical Center
A groundbreaking ceremony kicked off construction of the Career and Technical Center (CTC) on April 7, 2016. [Read more about the groundbreaking.]

New construction began in early 2016, and approval was given on Sept. 16 for the CTC to go vertical. Numerous tasks are underway, including structural concrete, masonry, steel erection, electrical and plumbing.

Construction of the CTC is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by VLK Architects. The building is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2017. It is being constructed on the site of the former Hutcheson Junior High.

Corey Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language
Corey Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language opened in August 2015 in the Corey Elementary building and renovations started that fall. The work is wrapping up this month and an open house on Oct. 15 gave the community a chance to see how it has been transformed. [Read more and see photos from the open house]

The building received extensive renovations to enhance the fine arts and dual-language programming. The renovations provided state-of-the-art fine arts spaces like strings rooms, piano practice rooms, drama space and dance studio. The building also received numerous life-cycle and deficiency upgrades.

Jones Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language
Jones Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language opened in August 2015 in the Roquemore Elementary building. Since the first school year ended in May 2016, major renovations on the building have been underway.

The school building is receiving extensive renovations to enhance the fine arts and dual language programming. The renovations are providing state-of-the-art fine arts spaces like strings rooms, piano practice rooms, drama space and a dance studio. In addition, adjustments are being made to ensure there are enough classrooms so that each class – or cohort – can spend half the day in an English-speaking classroom and half the day in a Spanish-speaking classroom.

The renovations are being done in three phases and won’t be completely finished until spring 2017. But the phasing plan – working in different areas of the building at different times – allows school to keep going.

Most of phase one was completed over the past summer. Major renovations were done to the cafeteria and stage, office and main entry, gym, pod building, collaborative group areas, piano lab, music rooms, practice music rooms, and east classrooms. Major structural upgrades were also completed to enhance and lengthen the life of the building, and exterior improvements, along with new landscaping, are being done to improve the school’s aesthetics. An outdoor performance area adjacent to Jones is under construction as well.

Phase two, which is already underway, includes renovation for the art rooms, STEM labs, collaborative group areas and interior classrooms. Then the third and final phase – beginning around Thanksgiving – will renovate the library, dance room and theater arts room.

While school is in session, areas of the building under renovation are walled-off. Students do not have access to those areas, and construction workers are not allowed in any part of the building other than their construction area. Construction workers are also required to pass a background check before working at Jones or any AISD campus.

Construction at Jones is being managed by Joeris Construction, following plans designed by Stantec Architects.

Little Elementary
The work is being phased throughout the year and into next summer to avoid disrupting school. The first projects this fall include renovations that will provide two STEM labs, repairs to the irrigation system and landscaping. Demolition in the area that will house the STEM labs began in September. Over winter break, the roof and rooftop air conditioners on the K-pod will be replaced.

A number of other life-cycle and deficiency upgrades will be made throughout the school year, including replacing mechanical equipment, the sanitary sewer line, water coolers, emergency lighting and outlets. The fire alarm system will also be updated, the roof will be repaired and the parking lots will be restriped. All of these tasks will be completed when school is not in session, in the evenings or on weekends, or in cordoned-off areas. Construction workers will not be allowed in the same areas as students and student safety will always be the number one priority.

When the school year ends in June 2017, construction will continue into the summer. The strings room will be enlarged, a security vestibule will be added, the carpet in the K-pod will be replaced, and the rooftop HVAC system on the gymnasium will be replaced. The music room will also be updated by painting, carpeting and raising the ceiling.

Construction at Little is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by HKS.

McNutt Elementary
The brand-new Sandy McNutt Elementary, located next to Workman Junior High, is open!

Though school has started, parts of the building are still being worked on. Greater than average rain earlier this year combined with a hard rock layer underground and the current demand on construction resources throughout Texas caused delays in the construction schedule.

The north wing of the building, which had remained under construction and closed off even after school started, opened Monday, Sept. 26. While it was under construction, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade classes were held at Burgin Elementary. But those classes are now permanently at McNutt as the school has possession of most of the building.

There are still some construction items being finished. Ongoing tasks include casework, metal panels on the exterior, playground, the elevator, irrigation and landscaping. However, those tasks are being completed either when school is not in session – in the evenings or on weekends – or in cordoned-off areas.

The construction of McNutt Elementary is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by Corgan.

Martin High School
The work at Martin High School is just gearing up. A construction trailer and staff from the construction manager, Balfour Beatty Construction, are onsite finalizing details to get the work started. Re-roofing is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 24. All the work is being phased throughout the year and into next summer to avoid disrupting school as much as possible. The plan and schedule are in place, but due to the fluid nature of construction, they are subject to change.

Projects this fall will kickoff with renovations to the biomedical room, music library room, orchestra rehearsal room and percussion rehearsal room. Locker room renovations, weight room repairs and a new roof over the auditorium and gyms are also on the schedule for this fall.

A number of other life-cycle and deficiency upgrades will be made throughout the school year, including, among others, replacement of plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, electrical panels and mechanical equipment. The fire alarm system will also be updated, a theater scene and prop assembly room added, and miscellaneous site repairs made. All of these tasks will be completed either when school is not in session, in the evenings or on weekends, or in cordoned-off areas.

When the school year ends in June 2017, construction will continue into the summer. Auditorium renovations will be made, including new seating, new carpet and the replacement of return ductwork. The lighting, stage rigging and audio system will also be replaced or repaired, and a video projection system and orchestra pit cover will be added. The black box theater will also undergo renovations. The ag, wood and metal shops will be renovated, along with the journalism/photography classroom. The boilers will be replaced, parking lot repairs made and new roofing installed over parts of the building.

The construction at Martin is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by HKS.

Miller Elementary
The work at Miller Elementary is being phased throughout the year and into next summer to avoid disrupting school. The first projects this fall include renovations that will give the school two STEM labs and a strings room, repairs to the irrigation system and the addition of 30 parking spaces in the north parking lot. Demolition in the area that will house the STEM labs began at the end of September.

The roof and rooftop air conditioners of the K-pod will be replaced over fall break. The break will also give workers the opportunity to begin putting in a security vestibule at the front of the building. That work will continue through the winter break.

A number of other life-cycle and deficiency upgrades will be made throughout the school year, including replacing mechanical equipment, the sanitary sewer line, water coolers, emergency lighting and outlets. The fire alarm system will also be updated. All of these tasks will be completed when school is not in session, in the evenings or on weekends, or in cordoned-off areas. Construction workers will not be allowed in the same areas as students and student safety will always be the number one priority.

When the school year ends in June 2017, construction will continue into the summer. The roof on the main building will be replaced, carpet in the K-pod will be replaced, a new playground will be installed, and parking lot improvements will be made.

Construction at Miller is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by HKS Architects.

Multipurpose Activity Centers
New, 77,704-square-foot Multipurpose Activity Centers now grace each of the AISD’s six traditional high school campuses. Arlington High School’s was the first to open last month, Martin’s was completed this month, and the other four will open soon.

The building permits were obtained for all six sites on Nov. 2, 2015, and work started shortly after. Though all six were built simultaneously, each moved at a slightly different schedule. [Click here for more details about the MACs.]

Peach Elementary
Peach Elementary is open!

Though school has started, parts of the building are still being worked on. Greater than average rain earlier this year and the current demand on construction resources throughout Texas caused delays in the construction schedule.

The southeast wing of the building, which had remained under construction and closed off even after school started, opened Monday, Sept. 26. While it was under construction, fifth- and sixth-grade classes were held at the Turning Point facility. But those classes are now permanently at Peach as the school occupies most of the building.

There are still some construction items being finished. Ongoing tasks include the millwork, exterior, flooring, playground and landscaping. However, those tasks are being completed either when school is not in session – in the evenings or on weekends – or in cordoned-off areas.

The construction of Peach Elementary is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by Perkins+Will.

Workman Junior High
Workman Junior High’s new 16-classroom addition is now open. The school also received a new entrance, renovated administration space and life-cycle upgrades, eight new classrooms in the existing building, and a new parking lot.

The building was functional for school by Aug. 22, and all life-safety items – like fire alarms – were complete, but some construction tasks have continued into the school year. Much of the remaining work, like landscaping, is taking place outside the building.

Tasks that still need to be completed inside are being done after school hours or in cordoned-off areas. They include completing the new cooler/freezer for the kitchen and completing the locker room showers.

In addition to the recent work, Workman’s cafeteria was expanded in the summer of 2015 and the kitchen was upgraded with new equipment.

All construction at Workman is being managed by Pogue Construction, following plans designed by Brown Reynolds Watford Architects.
