August 2016 bond construction update
Bond-related construction is in full-swing at multiple locations throughout the district. And this fall, construction will begin at many more campuses.
Below are details about the projects currently underway.
Boles Junior High
Construction at Boles is just getting started. Fencing has been put up, a construction trailer is on site and groundwork is starting.
Boles will receive a new special education suite within the existing building. The suite will include four special education classrooms, a mock apartment (ADL Room), motor lab, ISPD classroom, PAES/Prevoc room, ABLE room and conference room. Three restroom banks will also be renovated to comply with ADA.
The addition of the new suite will require the relocation of existing classrooms. To make space, Boles will receive an addition. The new addition will include a computer lab, an art room with support spaces and three CTHEI Classrooms.
Construction of the addition will begin first. Once complete, the special education suite will be built.
Construction at Boles is being managed by Pogue Construction, following plans designed by Stantec. The project is scheduled to be complete by the fall of 2017.
Career and Technical Center
A groundbreaking ceremony kicked off construction of the Career and Technical Center (CTC) on April 7, 2016. [Read more about the groundbreaking.]
The future districtwide CTC is being built on the site of the former Hutcheson Junior High. Hutcheson closed at the conclusion of the 2014-2015 school year and demolition of the building reached 100 percent completion in early 2016.
Now construction of the new 169,800 square-foot building is underway. Piers are being drilled, utilities installed and grade beams poured and backfilled. In addition, paving for the fire lane and south parking lot were done this month. The slab for one area of the building was also poured.
Construction of the CTC is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by VLK Architects. The building is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2017.

Corey Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language
Corey Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language opened in August 2015 in the Corey Elementary building and renovations started that fall. When school let out in May 2016, the construction work took over the entire building for the duration of the summer.
The school building received extensive renovations to enhance the fine arts and dual language programming the new academy offers. The renovations provide state-of-the-art fine arts spaces like strings rooms, piano practice rooms, drama space and dance studios. The building also received numerous life-cycle and deficiency upgrades.
Most of the work was completed in time for the start of school, but a few things are still being finished. For example, the front-entrance canopy and new windows on the east side still need to be finished. While school is in session, areas of the building still needing work are separated from the rest of the building. Students do not have access to those areas, and construction workers are not allowed in student areas. Construction workers are also required to pass a background check before working at Corey or any AISD campus. Most of the work is being done during evening hours or on weekends. About six more weeks are needed to complete the project.

Jones Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language
Jones Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language opened in August 2015 in the Roquemore Elementary building. Once the first school year ended in May 2016, major renovations on the building began.
The school building is receiving extensive renovations to enhance the fine arts and dual language programming the new academy offers. The renovations will provide state-of-the-art fine arts spaces like strings rooms, piano practice rooms, drama space and dance studios. In addition, adjustments will be made to ensure there are enough classrooms so that each class – or cohort – can spend half the day in an English classroom and half the day in a Spanish classroom.
Jones was a flurry of construction activity all summer. The renovations are being done in three phases and won’t be completely finished until next spring. But the phasing plan – working in different areas of the building at different times – allows school to keep going.
The summer was phase one. Major renovations were done to the cafeteria and stage, office and main entry, gym, pod building, collaborative group areas, piano lab, music rooms, practice music rooms and east classrooms. Major structural upgrades were also completed to enhance and lengthen the life of the building, and exterior improvements, along with new landscaping, were done to improve the school’s aesthetics. An outdoor performance area adjacent to Jones will be completed later in the fall.
Phase two, which is already underway, includes renovation for the art rooms, STEM labs, collaborative group areas and interior classrooms. Then the third and final phase will renovate the library, dance room and theater arts room.
While school is in session, areas of the building under renovation are walled-off. Students do not have access to those areas, and construction workers are not allowed in any part of the building other than their construction area. Construction workers are also required to pass a background check before working at Jones or any AISD campus.
Construction at Jones is being managed by Joeris Construction, following plans designed by Stantec Architects. The project is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2017.

McNutt Elementary
The brand-new Sandy McNutt Elementary, located next to Workman Junior High, is open!
Though school has started, parts of the building are still being worked on. Greater than average rain earlier this year combined with a hard rock layer underground and the current demand on construction resources throughout Texas have caused delays in the construction schedule. The north wing is still under construction and closed off from the rest of the building. As a result, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade classes are being held at Burgin Elementary for approximately six weeks.
In the rest of the building, there are still some construction items being finished, like flooring in parts of the building, metal panels on the front of the building, landscaping and the playground. However, those tasks will be completed either when school is not in session – in the evenings or on weekends – or in cordoned-off areas.
The construction of McNutt Elementary is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by Corgan.

Multi-purpose Activity Centers
New, large buildings now grace each of the AISD’s six campuses. These buildings, nearing completion, are the new Multipurpose Activity Centers (MACs).
The building permits were obtained for all six sites on Nov. 2, 2015, and work started shortly after. Though all six are being built simultaneously, each is moving at a slightly different pace. [Click here for more details about the MACs.]
Substantial completion of the 77,704-square-foot facilities is planned for the early fall of 2016. Construction is being managed by Balfour Beatty Construction, following plans designed by Huckabee.
Arlington High School
The Arlington High School MAC is nearing completion and should open soon. All the final loose ends are being tied up and final inspections conducted. [ ²¹²Ô»åÌý.]
Bowie High School
Completion of the Bowie MAC should come in October. The building is all closed in now and the RTUs have been set. In the field area, the vinyl wall panel installation is now complete, along with the installation of the batting cages and gutters. The turf install began this month. In the locker room area, some of the many tasks underway include the MEP rough in, along with exterior masonry, interior block fill and paint, interior soffit framing and more. [ and .]
Lamar High School
In the field area, turf is being installed. A number of other tasks are also getting done this month, including roof drains, metal trim, masonry and much more. In the locker room area, some of the many tasks include installing fire sprinklers, duct, drywall framing and sheetrock and ceiling grid. [ and .]
Martin High School
In the field area, the turf is being installed. In the locker room section, some of the many tasks this month include overhead MEP rough in, interior painting, ceiling lay in and installation of lockers, metal doors and hardware, interior glass, millwork and flooring. Work is also being done on the surrounding practice fields. [ and .]
Sam Houston High School

Seguin High School
In the field area, the turf in being installed and the exterior brick veneer completed. In the locker room section, some of the many tasks include painting and installing overhead MEP, low-voltage wire, the elevator, the storefront, metal doors, lockers, flooring and the lower roof. [ and .]
Eddy and Debbie Peach Elementary
Peach Elementary is now open!
Though school has started, parts of the building are still being worked on. Greater than average rain earlier this year and the current demand on construction resources throughout Texas have caused delays in the construction schedule. The southeast wing is still under construction and closed off from the rest of the building. As a result, fifth- and sixth-grade classes are being held at the Turning Point Junior High for approximately six weeks. There will not be any Turning Point Junior High students in the facility during this time period.
In the rest of the building, there are still some construction items that need to be finished, like bathroom flooring in parts of the building, metal panels on the front of the building, the library, landscaping and the playground. However, those tasks will be completed when school is not in session, in the evenings or on weekends, or in cordoned-off areas.

Ousley Junior High
All building-related construction at Ousley Junior High is now complete, with most of it done last summer. All that remains is work on Ousley’s outdoor athletic field, which started this spring and is ongoing. The football field is being repositioned and getting a new four-lane track. The field will also receive sports lighting.
The completed work at Ousley included a number of projects related to life-cycle upgrades and replacements, along with improvements designed to accommodate growth. The student and faculty population has grown considerably since it consolidated with Ferguson Junior High in 2015. The AISD raced to get most of the projects done over last summer so the campus would be ready when school started in August 2015.
The high-priority jobs completed last summer were changes associated with Ousley’s growth. While the building itself is large enough, some interior changes were required. The administration offices were renovated, with walls rearranged to accommodate more faculty, including an additional assistant principal and school counselor. Another task was the division of one very large classroom into three, which required adding walls and new doorways.
Other jobs included the replacement of water fountains and light fixtures and the improvement of ADA accessibility – including adding grab bars in the restrooms. Twenty HVAC rooftop units were replaced, along with all related controls. The roof was also replaced. Among other improvements, the technology connectivity was upgraded and ID card access controls added. The stage curtains were replaced with eight new curtains, including curtains at the front of the stage, along the sides and in the middle.

Workman Junior High
Workman Junior High’s new 16-classroom addition is now open. The school also received a new entrance, renovated administration space and life-cycle upgrades, eight new classrooms in the existing building and a new parking lot.
The building was functional for school by Aug. 22, and all life-safety items – like fire alarms – will be complete, but some construction tasks are continuing into the school year. Much of the remaining work will take place outside the building and will not disrupt school inside. The tasks that still need to be completed inside will be done after school hours. The construction trailer and construction parking lot at the southeast end of the building will remain for several more months.
In addition to the recent work, Workman’s cafeteria was expanded last summer and the kitchen was upgraded with new equipment.
